Every time you buy a drink in store, go shopping in the mall, or withdraw some cash from ATM, you will get a receipt slip. This receipt slip is actually Thermal Paper. Thermal Paper is a special fine paper that is coated with a chemical that changes color when exposed to heat. It is used in thermal printers, adding machines, ATM Machines, Boarding passes, Baggage stickers, cash registers and credit card terminals. The unique feature of thermal paper is that it is coated with layer of chemicals. If you touch thermal paper it feels very different from ordinary plain paper. The layer of chemical on the paper reacts when heat is applied, resulting in a dark image. These chemicals are also responsible for its slippery surface.

Receipts are printed on thermal paper, a chemically coated paper that produces text and image when heat is applied to its surface.Since this kind of paper is susceptible to heat and UV light extended exposure to these elements will ultimately cause gradual fading. Now you must be wondering, despite of this disadvantage why is the use of thermal paper so widespread. It’s because they are very low cost and the equipment used to print is low maintenance, since it doesn’t need ink or ribbon catridges. But there are ways to restore thermal receipts.
Restoring a faded thermal paper is quite simple. Here are the ways to do so.
Scan and digitally restore it. Open the image in a photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop and make a negative of it by adjusting certain image settings.
Apply heat to it. Set your hair dryer on medium and then blow hot air directly towards the receipt until the text becomes visible. You can also heat the receipt using a bulb. The key is to keep the source of heat a few inches away from the back of the receipt.
A great mobile app to recover the faded receipt paper.
